A very petite and sparsely populated island located 20 miles southwest of San Salvador. The island was originally named Santa Maria de la Concepcion by Columbus. The modern name Rum Cay is said to be in the memory of the cargo of a ship that foundered off the coral reefs that surround the island’s shore. The only settlement is Port Nelson, a picturesque village nestled among coconut groves and home to a few inhabitants of the island.
