Mayaguana has been sometimes called the ‘stepchild’ or the ‘orphan’ and it is one of the Bahamian islands that still retains its Arawak name. There is a U.S Missile Tracking Station there with a small deployment of personnel, Mayaguana is home to the longest airstrip runway in the Caribbean. It is approximately 10,000ft long and was constructed in the 1940’s to aid with launching and accommodating U.S aircrafts. Populated by farmers and fishermen, its largest settlement is Abraham’s Bay. There are two other substantial settlements. Betsy Bay on the east coast and the Pirate’s Well in north.
